Do your part by engaging with your child throughout the day at the place where they spend most of their time: home! Speech therapy doesn’t end at school or the private practice. There are countless things you can do as a parent or caregiver to practice essential skills being taught in therapy. After all, the ultimate goal of therapy is for our little ones to generalize everything they’re learning to ALL contexts, especially outside the therapy room. Encourage your child to communicate their needs instead of offering or guessing what they may want. Waiting for their words is a powerful tool that can make the difference between relying on a prompt and the gold standard: initiation! If your child needs more support, try modeling. You can model anything from proper speech sounds and grammar, to vocabulary and social communication. And don’t underestimate the power of creativity! Read a story that exposes your child to the sounds they may struggle with or sing a song to bombard them with language. Your involvement as a parent can make a huge impact on how well your child performs and progresses with their unique goals.
