Multimodal communication is magic when it comes to learning language for children. “Multimodal” is exactly what it sounds like - multiple modes - which includes communication using verbal means, as well as non verbal methods like pictures, gestures, sign language, and more. In schools, speech therapy, and other child-centered settings, it is very common for professionals to pair verbal instructions with simple, functional signs. Simple signs allow for children to express themselves in a different way, while also providing an option for children who may struggle to access their language verbally. It’s a life-changing way for children to express themselves and can reduce any frustration they may feel from not being understood. Introducing signs can accomplish various functions: from requesting “more,” to indicating “all done.” This website provides images of a few basic signs and pair with their verbal counterparts to introduce to your child: https://bit.ly/signathome
Magnolia Speech Therapy uses a Natural Language Acquisition approach in therapy, which facilitates language-learning with a multimodal approach to best meet your child with the method of communication most comfortable to them. This process allows us to get on the same level as the child, understand their learning styles and language processing abilities, and teach language skills using individual words in a meaningful and original way!
